Discover a new world under the sea
Scuba diving offers a wonderful combination of relaxation and excitement and is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. Across the world, if there's water then diving will be taking place, providing a marvellous opportunity to witness unique marine life and underwater scenery.
It feels strange the first time. You ease into the water and your face slips below the surface. You inhale; the air comes with a reassuring hiss and for the first time you breathe underwater. In moments, you are free in a way you have never experienced before. With that first underwater breath, the door opens to a different world.
Go through that door and your life will never be the same again. If you seek adventure, you will find plenty. If you love nature, you have come to the right place. If discovery drives you, welcome to the inner space.
The scuba dive challenge
Scuba diving means rising to new challenges. It is one of those rare activities that deliver adrenaline and intensity, or serenity and peace. You can take on challenges that require training, or simply explore your favourite dive site after sunset. Alternatively, you can just drift along in some of the worlds most tranquil and beautiful settings, viewing a spectacle denied to those who choose to stay above the water surface. Either way, there's always something new to see, somewhere new to explore, some way new to enjoy the experience.
Nothing on earth matches the sensations: you experience the thrill of breathing underwater, the freedom of 'weightlessness' and the unique sights and sounds. Welcome to the world of discovery. Experience intense adventure. The ability to dive also opens up areas of special interest: you might try photography or video, explore wrecks, dive at night or in currents - the possibilities are as varied as the underwater world itself. It is also a great way to make friends as you work together and share your experiences at the all-important après-dive. It is a non-competitive activity too, so you will be a winner every time.
How do you get into diving?
The first thing to realise is that there are surprisingly few barriers; you need not even be a particularly good swimmer, just reasonably fit and healthy. A Discover Scuba session is an excellent way to try diving before you commit yourself: these sessions are in a swimming pool, to give you some idea of what the sport is like.
The most popular entry-level course is the PADI Open Water course, which covers theory, pool training and then open water diving. Most of our pool sessions happen every Tuesday evening from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Almondbury High School Pool, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Even the theory sessions are fun, providing background information to the skills you will learn while in the pool, then you progress to your first session in open water, usually an inland dive site or sometimes the sea. After around 30 hours of training over weekends or evenings, sometimes in a single week, you have gained your qualification and the wonderful world of scuba diving is yours for the exploring.
